Water electrolysis

In the electrolysis of water, water is split into hydrogen and oxygen using electric current. Water electrolysis is still a marginal but environmentally friendly form of hydrogen production when compared to other processes by the use of electricity produced from renewable sources. Hydrogen obtained by electrolysis is used where smaller quantities of very pure hydrogen or oxygen are required. Hydrolysis of hydrogen is justified if surpluses of cheaper electricity from hydro, wind or solar (photovoltaic) systems are available.
